Student Internships

We offer hands-on internship opportunities for students and emerging professionals who want real experience in community-based work. Interns are part of the day-to-day operations, supporting distributions, working alongside volunteers, and helping connect people with resources.
Our current internship openings are listed below, and we accept applications on a rolling basis. Because we host a limited number of interns at a time, we’re able to focus on a more hands-on, meaningful experience. Internships typically range from 10–20 hours per week and can vary based on your interests and area of focus.
If you don’t see an opportunity that fits but have an idea or specific interest, we encourage you to reach out - we’re always open to starting a conversation!
Please note that all internships at the South Portland Food Cupboard are unpaid at this time.

Social Work/Community Impact Internship
The South Portland Food Cupboard’s Social Work / Community Impact Internship offers hands-on experience in a community-based food pantry setting focused on dignity, connection, and access to resources. Interns are embedded in day-to-day operations, engaging directly with recipients to build relationships, identify needs, and connect individuals to local supports.
For Summer 2026, this role will focus on enriching and expanding SPFC’s resource offerings - both on our website and during in-person distributions. The intern will help strengthen how resources are shared, making them more accessible, visible, and useful to the community.
Responsibilities include engaging with recipients during distributions, providing guidance on resources such as SNAP, housing, and healthcare, and helping develop clear, user-friendly resource materials. Interns will also support updating and organizing online resources, identifying service gaps, and enhancing how information is communicated both digitally and face-to-face.
This role emphasizes strengths-based, trauma-informed engagement and offers valuable experience in community work, resource navigation, and nonprofit operations.
Ideal for individuals interested in social work, community health, or human services.
